Hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects about one third of people in the UK at some point in their lives.

Research shows that nearly 80% of these can be treated with either standard medical treatment and hypnotherapy, or hypnotherapy alone. Long-term studies report long lasting results at 5 year followup.

The exact causes of IBS are unknown. The structure of the bowel is normal in the majority of people with IBS, but there is a  strong link between stress and IBS. What seems to happen with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is that the bowel becomes very sensitive and responds with irregular contractions or spasms to stimuli such as stress or simply eating a meal.

Symptoms vary between individuals, but the following are common symptoms of IBS:

  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Abdominal contractions, spasms or cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Excess wind
  • Indigestion

IBS sufferers may experience a combination of some of these symptoms, with one symptom in particular occurring more regularly or with greater severity. Symptoms vary from the mild, where they don't really affect someone's quality of life, to the disabling, prompting the sufferer to seek medical help.

Thanks largely to the work of Peter Whorwell of Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, hypnotherapy is now acknowledged by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) as an effective treatment for IBS.

In my practice as a medical hypnotherapist, I specialise in the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with evidence-based hypnotherapy and have been priviledged to help many people make, at times, life changing, positive progress and reclaim their lives from IBS. I would be delighted to help you make this change too.

As a medical doctor as well as a hypnotherapist trained in medical hypnosis, I am able to help my clients co-ordinate and manage their conventional drug medications and treatments alongside their hypnotherapy treatment.
