What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a special kind of relationship that aims to help clients gain insight into their difficulties or distress, establish a greater understanding of their motivation, and enable them to find more appropriate ways of coping or bring about changes in their thinking, feelings and behaviour.
Psychotherapy involves exploring feelings, beliefs, thoughts and relevant events, sometimes from childhood and personal history, in a structured way with someone trained to help you do it safely.
If you like, Psychotherapy is a journey you embark upon with the therapist as your guide to discover more about the strengths and wonders of your true authentic self.
What happens during Psychotherapy?
Every session is different because every client is different, as are their problems. As your Psychotherapist, I will encourage you to talk and explore, in a structured way, your feelings and experiences. Depending on your particular difficulties, personality and nature, I may also suggest particular approaches as part of that exploration – for example, using visualisations, free writing, art, dream or movement work.
We may pay particular attention to the experiences that occur within your thoughts, feelings and body experience as they arise within session, to help you gain increased awareness of your own responses.
I may suggest particular practices, tasks or skills to develop between sessions, but I will tend to do so only once I have seen coming up for you a natural 'lean' towards a direction on your healing journey that it will be helpful for you to develop.
What Factors Define My Approach?
Holistic and Integrative
My approach is non-judgmental and integrative, which means that I will use a variety of therapeutic approaches and in order to help you as my client to achieve your goals. This means I take the very best of what works from a wide range of psychotherapy modalities (CBT, Gestalt, Tranactional Analysis, Person Centred, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness, Ericksonian, 'Inner Child', Transpersonal), and have many 'tools in my toolbox'. I bring this together with my medical training, human biologists understanding, life experiences into a unique, broad truly holistic approach that helps you explore and resolve your needs in all the facets that make up you - mind, body, emotion and spirit.
Client-Centred Therapy Tailored To Your Needs
Flexible and adaptive to my client’s needs always, I believe that the 'one size fits all' approach to therapy, where the therapist controls the agenda and sticks with their modality regardless of your needs makes for very poor therapy experience. For me, the best therapy is that which is client led and tailored to the client in the therapy session that helps them to continue on their journey to success. Its important also to hold on to the fact that what we as clients want from a therapy session is not always what we best need.
Focusing on Solutions, Not Problems
I tend to be solution focused, which means that together we primarily look at solutions as opposed to focusing on problems in order to help you move forward. This doesn’t mean we ignore problems or issues that are causing concern, just which we don’t focus exclusively on those.
Evidence Based Proven Solutions For A Range of Problems and Symptoms
You can be confident that I only use approaches that have been proven to be effective in clinical and academic journals or through anecdotal evidence of over years of clinical practice.
Conversational and Interventional
Generally my style as a therapist is conversational, dynamic and interpretive (as opposed to a more reflective counselling or psychodynamic approach where the client does 95% of the talking).
Staying with the Unconsious Process As It Arises in the Present
I tend to help you work with whatever comes up in the therapy room as it unfolds, rather than over-riding your unconscious process by planning and structuring the session too much ahead of time. This doesnt mean its all very 'floaty' and I don't 'steer the ship', it does mean that I take care not to get in the way of what's already changing and emerging within you as we work. This way, I find we can much more effectively allow your healing process to unfold in the best way for you, and at the best pace for you, without getting in its way. I believe in your innate unconscious wisdom to heal and trust in the unconscious process 100% to get you to where you need to be. If you are looking for a technique-giving therapist with a rigid protocol and worksheets, I won't be the right therapist for you. I work with the unconscious process, whether I am working with or without formal hypnosis.
Using the Healing Skills and Resources You Already Possess
I am also a Utilitarian as a Psychotherapist, which means that rather than ‘re-inventing the wheel’ and having to learn a whole new set of skills as you heal, I help you become aware of your pre-existing skills and resources and to develop these skills to use in your own unique solutions.
Respecting Your Inner Wisdom
I believe real, lasting, positive change is a process of growth and mastery that is organic. I have the utmost respect for the wisdom of your unconscious and your body. A healing journey to some extent has its own timing and pace is very important. Our work together is to ensure the best environment so that your healing journey can unfold for you, guided by your healing wisdom, as rapidly is as possible for you.
Respecting The Therapeutic Relationship
All my therapeutic work is deeply rooted within the safety and containment of the therapeutic relationship and reflects the core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional non-judgement.
