E-Cigarettes May Actually Harm Your Chance of Quitting Smoking
As e-cigarettes become widespread and commercialised, despite firm evidence that they are useful or safe, smokers are increasingly using them. They are not only used by those smokers attempting to quit combustible cigarettes, but by those who wish to use nicotine where smoking is prohibited.
A large systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Sara Kalkhoran, MD and Professor Stanton Glantz was published in the peer reviewed medical journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine recently. Their research aimed to assess the association between e-cigarette use and cigarette smoking cessation among adult cigarette smokers, irrespective of their motivation for using e-cigarettes.
38 studies (of 577 studies identified) were included in the systematic review; all 20 studies with control groups (15 cohort studies, three cross-sectional studies, and two clinical trials) were included in random effects meta-analysis and sensitivity analyses.
Their conclusion was that the odds of quitting cigarettes were significantly lower (28% lower) in those who used e-cigarettes compared with those who did not use e-cigarettes.
Personally, I am not surprised by this study. E-cigarettes, in my opinion, reinforce, rather than break, a habitual smoking behaviour. They foster the need for an oral fixation; keep cigarette smoking triggers alive, making it easy to slip back into combustible smoking ways. There is billions to be made for some, remember, in having you switch your nicotine dependence from cigarettes to e-cigarettes.
The truth is you don’t need smoking in your life and your body doesn’t want it! You can overcome smoking addiction and it can be much easier than you imagine if you seek the support you need.
